Re: Hunting Party #112

@Euripides

Okay, enough of the hyperboles, which that 20+ minute segment was just so full of. Could you refrain from these types of comments in your podcast and stick to facts?

First of all, LFR do not gain any achievements other than a completion. That completion is necessary to link to a Raid Leader when you want to participate in open loot guild hosted normal mode or pug normal mode on your server. This shows that yes, you are somewhat familiar with the content, so there shouldn't be senseless deaths or mistakes.

The achievements for normal and hard mode completion of the raid is a title. LFR do not have this. That's the distinction, which is the important one, because you were complaining about a lack of achievement for doing the normal/heroic modes. That isn't the only achievement, but afaik, for most players I know, it's an pretty important one.

If there any vanity pets or mounts, I'm certain that LFR won't drop them. Again, more incentives to protect your "precious" normal/hard mode achievements.

Frosthelm was completely right throughout that discussion. Every single point - EVERY SINGLE POINT - was what Blizzard, Ghostcrawler and their Community Managers have tried to make. I've only seen those 5% raiders complain and bemoan the "deathnell" of World of Warcraft. For the rest of the 10,000,000+ players, it's a great thing.

Your disparaging comments and your penchant for hyperbole turns me off and I'm pretty sure many of your "casual" audience feels the same way, too.

Re: Hunting Party #12

@Euripides

Your comments regarding freshly hit 85s being able to kill Deathwing was complete hyperbole. First of all, there is a gear restriction to even use LFR. Freshly hit 85s will have gear levels at the 320-330sh level if all they did was grind quests to level up. I won't bother to include pre-heroic dungeons since RNG is RNG and majority of these "casual" players do not have time to "grind" dungeons for blue loot.

So, in the end, it will take newly leveled 85s so many days, if not weeks, to get the appropriate level gear to even participate in random Hour of the Twilight heroics. You can argue that they can get the VP gear to aid in that. Fair enough. However, at 1,000 VP a week, that's not going to happen for at least a few weeks for these people.

In the end, it will be weeks before any player relying on LF to gear up to participate in LFR (Dragon Soul) especially if they only have a couple of hours a day to devote themselves to that task. If they want to do dailies, this will give them less time to spend in LF. If they're DPS, the queue times can be long, depending on time of day. Best case scenario, someone will see Dragon Soul within a month after hitting 85. Worst case scenario? Could be a couple of months, maybe even 3 months, before they do.

You're arguing from the perspective of an alt character being able to go into Dragon Soul within a couple of weeks of hitting 85, with the support of a guild/dedicated friends carrying said individual. If that's the case, then this whole issue is moot, wouldn't you agree?

Note: LFR is also a whole 'nother issue. It's fine now that progression raiders are using LFR to augment their gear finding in addition to their guild lead Normal/Heroic raiding. These progression raiders are simply carrying LFR. Once they've got what they need and no longer benefit from LFR, what will be left are casual raiders and non-progression raiders. Simply put, they are not fit and not capable of putting two words into a sentence. I've been in one recently where we wiped over and over due to many of these players not knowing what to do and not knowing how to handle fight mechanics. No healer grabbing the buff on Ultraxion. DPS simply not switching fast enough on tentacles. These are the things that separate the casual/non-progression from the "top 5% or 10%" of raiders. You'd be surprised to know, even a month after this episode aired, that there are a LOT of LFR groups still struggling to "kill Deathwing".

i dunno if you read these comments, but about ES clipping you can fire LnL with only 1 filler and without clipping. This was true in 4.2. I stopped playing so not sure if this is still the case.

the trick is to insert the filler between the 2 free Explosive shots: ES -> Filler -> ES -> ES (9 ticks, no clipping). Your choice of fillers is narrower (Cobra or KC), but you get the full 9 ticks so it's about 5k dps more than the 8 tick dump everyone is talking about.

With testing done I concluded that Normal ES (not LnL ES) and LnL ES ticks CAN stack. So doing ES (LnL) -> Filler -> ES (LnL) -> ES (Normal) works.

Similarly if you get a LnL proc just AFTER you fired your normal ES, you can do:
ES (Normal + LnL Proc) -> ES (LnL) -> Filler -> ES (LnL) -> ES (Normal) (12ticks, no clipping)

Anyway, just wanted to share with you lot.

Since I went to the effort of curating this for the #100 episode, here's the contents:

#97 "Where's Alisaunder?" ; no primary topic, but whether pure DPS
classes should be hybridised was perhaps closest.

- Who: Darkbrew, Frostheim, (no guest), Alisaunder AWOL for first ~20mins

News/discussion topics:
- Time shift of HPP (4hrs earlier)
- Upcoming Sept 16 WHU event
- The name-something-for-Zeherah campaign and her response read by
Frost (11:25) "personally I will just be very happy if I have a gun to
play with in the next patch. I don't care what it's called, I just
don't want to be using a bow for the rest of the expansion!"
- Transmogrifying limitations
- "Ghostcrawler probably listens to your podcast" ; subsequent
reiteration of serious hunter issues
- The ball-of-fire pet
- Hybrid specs ; no longer a "hybrid tax"; is it time to let pure
DPSers become hybrids too?
- HPP #100 podcast thoughts

Questions:
- Ranking question was: what happened to Alisaunder?
- What super-overpowered ability would you create for hunters?
- Is it time to kill pure DPS classes?
- Is hardcasting aimed shot more viable as 4.3 and more haste comes?
- Whether a bugged permanent Bloodlust buff is more dps?
- On self-heals
- Suggestions for soloing Ghostcrawler?
- What is the best pet for charisma?
- Guidance on the use of traps

Predictions:
- Frost prediction (07:30): predicting more deaths in the upcoming Sept
16 WHU than in the level 10 WHU event
- Frost+Dark hard prediction (22:45): that the ball of fire pet will be
nerfed ASAP as it's untargetable in PvP

Disagreements:
- n/a

Quotes:
- Frost (leads in from 55:55): (on itunes reviews) "Really, this is
only benefit we get from the podcast.. is.. is reading positive reviews
on iTunes to prop up our self esteem. There's really nothing else in
this for us."
- Alisaunder (56:35): Deathwing is a sporebat

I'm writing this from work, so I might not get this exactly right, but I think the macro I use to always switch to Fox for Cobra Shot is this:

#showtooltip Cobra Shot
/use !Aspect of the Fox
/use !Cobra Shot

I assume it would work the same way for Steady Shot. I normally keep the macroed version on a hidden action bar so it's easily availabe to swap in and out for movement heavy fights.

Ok, so I listened to the #80 podcast with BRK and his energy pumped me up for the BM spec. I've been around since the BC days when Blizz took the big nerf bat to BM hunters and made it so everyone ran away from that spec. And I raided thru Lich King and remember laughing at the dedicated few who tried to pump out the DPS in BM, not very successfully though.
But when BRK says it's a fun spec, I listened. And I have to tell ya, I haven't had this much fun learning a spec in a long time. I never ran BM coming up and it wasn't till I was 80 that I started to stray from the standard MM spec into the other 2 tree's. I picked up Frostheim's Extreme Soloing spec and had ton's of fun rep grinding in BC dungeons and eventually with enough courage I ventured into the WotLK dungeons to many hours of successful challenges.
So I have some experience with the BM spec and took up the challenge after hearing BRK talk about it. And all I can say is wow. Blizz took a spec that was essentially dead and gave it the jolt it needed to attract a new generation of BM hunters that will cry along with the rest of you when the next nerf bat comes cruising around.
By the way, tell BRK that within 2 days of picking up this spec I've acquired Arcturis, Skoll, Ghostcrawler and Terrorpene. So thanks for that.

Love

The comment about hunters being apart from the rest of the raid made me chuckle a bit, because I often find myself apart from the crowd naturally and I wonder why it is, but I think I've got it. In fact if I'm in a raid and people are moving around and a fellow raid member gets close to me, I find myself thinking "what's he doing standing by me?" and subconsciously move a few meters away.

We hunters just cherish our personal pew-pew space.

In any other situation if another player or an enemy NPC is close to us, something has gone wrong. In PvE if a mob is up in our grill, something has gone wrong. in PvP if a warrior or rogue is nearby we want to get away FAST. We're used to sending in our pet to tank and then blasting away from afar, with nothing near by - so I think a lot of it comes from that. And probably the longer you've played as a hunter, the more weird you feel about being clustered up in a raid.

Me personally, when our raid healers tell us to group up, or when we collapse on Valiona during blackout, I feel awkward and claustrophobic. It's a funny and interesting thing that having that sort of play style can effect you psychologically like that.

I just came back to WOW after almost a year off and I am figuring out my SV rotation. I Understand that steady shot is almost worthless but what I am trying to figure out based on this show is if I should be using cobra shot in place of steady shot I would almost be spamming just cobra''s while waiting for cooldowns etc. is this true?

I like Euripides and Darkbrew, but I gotta say, all Frostheim worked out pretty well. I found this episode particularly informative and useful, and about as fun as the others.

Just wanted to assure Frostheim it wasn't a complete failure. I know how fragile his ego is. I look forward to the return of the other hosts next time!

Hunters were originally the ones to perform an initial pull. This went to the wayside in recent years. Now with the misdirect/multi-shot combo this would seem to be an even more desirable option as to give the focus (tank) a good start on aggro. Why is it not generally not done? Thanks.

Great show, quite funny! Zeherah seemed very nice, I love the fact that a girl is so much into wow and theorycrafting. I'd ask her out for a drink and chat about wow all night long! ;) Anyway, thanks for your work Zehera, keep it up!

I like the idea with the pets but what about over all, my main is a hunter and I have been paying and playing wow for a long time now and never missed a month, They have ruined my hunter, I do the worst damage in icc now, are they gonna fix this, I loved my hunter and now he really is a huntard, Ive done research, ive regemed, and reforged every way possible and can't get but little results, meanwhile all casters are wrecking dps, what about us, if you care about us at all, you'll make the pets even stronger and give us more buffs so that we can keep up with everyone else, and I haven't heard one hunter happy about the changes, everyone is complaining. Please Help Us.

Hmmm, lemme see here:
Pet Crit Immunity = GC makes a note on his Blackberry
Pet Collars = nod, smile, "sounds doable", etc. (no Blackberry involved)

Doesn't sound too promising for the collars but I think it's a great idea :)

In my opinion i feel that our role as hunters is going to change from damage monster to crowd control guru and raid buff saviour. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I fell this way primarily due to the drastic drop in dps for our class in 4.0 and as hunters we will play a key role in Cata.

It's probably frost playing with a slinky. He is one of those fidgeters who isn't happy if he's not making background noise (or typing). In any case, I can't remove it because it's all coming from the same mic.

Love the show!

Q: The last 3 shows got published on the website at same time, after about a month of no new shows. Is there somewhere else where these shows are being published which I can download as they're released? Or do you guys just release them in batches and only on this website?

I have never really understood why people think that 25 mans have to be better than 10. I have raided for a long time, and I have found that 10 mans require much more skill, from all players. I have been in 25 mans where we killed the boss with the corpses of the dead morons who stand in fires, because they are there to get carried. In 10 mans there is very little room for people that want to get carried. On fights that have a rage timer, I have noticed that if you lose one in a 10 man that can cause a wipe if it is your highest dps. Now I have been in 25 mans where the highest dps and 4 other dps died and we still beat the enrage timer. That is five people 20/25 is 80% to lose 80% in a 10 man is a for sure wipe on an enragement timer. This does not seem to me something that I personally would want to glorify. Just something that I wanted to put out there, I will be one that will not be doing 25 mans anymore; I am so glad they are opening up 10 mans. I don’t think I will be the only one either.

The direct download isn't working. There is an extra bracket "]" at the end, could that be why?

Regarding the discussion on minimum range - from the perspective of a Warrior, I can tell you with certainty that if Hunters could shoot at melee range, they would be too powerful in PvP. Any other ranged class is soft and - notably - they can be interrupted and silenced. Hunters are not susceptible to that. They would massacre people.

On blocked shots. This IS an intended behavior if you are standing in front of a boss, this can happen in some boss fights that require lots of movement like Heroic Deathwhisper, Rotface, Professor Putricide, Blood Princes, and Lich King. In order to reproduce this phenomenon dps a boss while you are "looking" at each other.

So when you click "play", it says "Welcome to episode 38"? When I do it, it says "welcome to episode 39"... I'm checking on iTunes now to make sure it's mapped properly there too.

edit: I checked on iTunes and it works for me there too. If it saved 38 while the file was pointing in the wrong direction, just delete and redownload to get the proper one.

Very interesting interview and I look forward to Loinclothz's return to the podcast.

I'd especially like to hear the answer to the question about which abilities he feels are essential keybinds and which are the priority defensive cooldowns. It kind of got lost in the whole discussion about keybindings and keyboard turning and one I feel most hunters transitioning from PvE to PvP could use advise on.

By that I mean PvP hunters quickly have to find keyboard space for Disengage, Deterrence, Master's Call, Intervene, Roar of Sacrifice, Pet ability (Pin, Web) as well as the PvP Trinket(s) and Viper Sting and Scorpid Sting if MM. It's a lot and I'd sure be interested in his thoughts on which ones to start binding right off the bat and which ones to start adding as those become comfortable and learned.

Cheers

another thought:
The negative commentators would encounter responses like "he mentioned that in the indepth article" and they would feel justifiably silly. People will be less likely to leave critical feedback without going in depth so the critical comments will be of a higher quality and from those people who were interested enough to read the indepth article. Keeping track of how deep readers go into an article could be a very useful statistic which tells us something about the quality of the article.

Hey Guys,
The article word limit problem is a really big issue. Having a link at the bottom to the longer more in-depth version of the article would allow people who are really interested to learn further. Furthermore, a super short abstract of the article would allow casual skimmers (ie. non hunters) to get the jist of the article at just a glance. A tiered system would allow a reader to learn to the depth that he/she desires.

News journalists have the same types of article word limits which arose from articles being actually printed on paper and real estate was limited. This mindset can change now, it is the era of the internet and we should act like it.

I want to hear what you guys think about this idea if possible,
thanks,
-E

I noticed the newer podcasts have an mp3 download attached in the notes, but the older ones don't. I would really like to just keep these podcasts around on my mp3 player (Yes, I am an addict).

Is there somewhere I could get the podcasts, or should I try to figure out iTunes? Thanks for any reply. :D

Frost,

You mentioned in the podcast that you wanted to make a Jump-disengage video, and I would like to see your take on it...

Kripparian has a PvP video from 3.2 where he uses disengage in some VERY unique ways. My personal favorites are at 0:50 when he disengage-saves from a Tidal Wave (or whatever those other inferrior classes do)... and at 6:24 when he jump-disengages over a gap in WSG to catch the flag carrier.

His PvP skills really are quite phenominal, and showcase a good example of how 1337 hunter PvP can be.

What an awesome podcast!

I used to listen to BRK intermittently, but I find this podcast is just slightly better pitched for me in the UK and being a tiny bit more focused on perfecting my DPS.

Keep up the good work. This makes the walk in to work go way too fast.

I've been on this discussion a bit, and a thought someone came up with: The added AP against undead does NOT transfer to your pet. I'm not sure if they ever got around to transferring regular AP to pets or not?

It's nice to see positive reactions about the enchant, and i loved the Podcast again, sure you should keep a eye out for switching the weapons out, butt for me that falls in the same line as checking my buffs, my pet buffs, my mana, etc.
I use Outfitter to switch it out butt i keep doing it by hand, and have not had a problem with it.

The main hunters in our guild are using it on there weapons now altho its only a small upgrade.

I THINK I can sort of do it with Outfitter, so that will automatically equip a certain set of gear when I enter ICC. That might be the way to go, if I decide to do this. It wouldn't be "This gear for this type of mob" that I'm thinking about, but would serve the purpose.

NOTE: I sent this to Frostheim as a personal email, but then thought it might be best answered here, where it could be discussed.

I was listening to the podcast on my way in to work this morning, and a niggling thought stuck itself in my mind. Being the theoretical-minded hunters that you are ( and exceptionally good looking, as I understand) I thought it would be something to wrap your mind around.

You were talking about the hunter that had Scourgebane on his weapon, and your thought was "If you had the same weapon, it MIGHT not be a bad idea, but you KNOW you would forget somewhere."

Now, here's the thing. I have the Orca-Hunter's Harpoon. In fact, I happen to have 2 of them. One of them I slipped a Titanium Weapon Chain on, and just use for PvP.

I have the old macro that we used to use when Improved Tracking needed to change to work, so I'm wondering if something like that could be Macroed in, say to a pet attack button, that changed weapons when attacking undead. I'm using Outfitter Addon still, so perhaps with that?

Again, its just an idea I had, and I havent quite fleshed it out yet, but I thought it worth discussion.

What do you think?
